GPA Calculator
Calculate a weighted GPA on a 4.0 U.S. scale. Add courses, letter grades, and credit hours to see your average.

Schools use different scales, plus/minus values, and weighted AP/IB rules. This 4.0 chart is a common U.S. default, not your registrar.
See the average before the transcript does
A semester GPA is not the mean of letter grades. Credits weight the result, and plus/minus steps change the points. This GPA calculator lets you add each course, pick a letter, set credit hours, and read a 4.0-scale average as you go. It is the same quality-point method U.S. registrars use, with a published plus/minus chart so there are no hidden mappings.
Use it to test “what if I get a B in chemistry” before drop deadlines. Because the math is local, you can sit in a library and scenario-plan without pasting a transcript into a random form.
The quality-point formula
GPA = Σ (points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. An A in a 4-credit course contributes 16 quality points. A B in a 3-credit course contributes 9. Those two courses together are 25 points over 7 credits, which is a 3.57 GPA—not a 3.5 that you would get by averaging 4.0 and 3.0 and ignoring credits.
The letter chart on this page is a widely used 4.0 plus/minus scale. Some schools make A+ a 4.3, some cap every A at 4.0, and some weight AP or honors with an extra point. If your handbook disagrees, the calculator cannot override the handbook. Use it as a close estimate and confirm with the registrar’s tool when the number is for probation, Latin honors, or a graduate application.
How to use it
Add a row per course. Credits are usually 1, 3, or 4; labs may be 1. Delete a row if you dropped the class. The GPA at the top is live. Empty lists show a dash instead of a fake 0.00, because zero credits is not a GPA.
For a cumulative figure, enter prior courses too, or combine last term’s official GPA with this term by converting the old GPA back into quality points: old GPA × old credits, then add this term and divide by all credits. This page does not fetch your campus SIS.
Examples
A (3 credits) and B (3 credits) is (12 + 9) / 6 = 3.50. A (4), C (3), B (3) is (16 + 6 + 9) / 10 = 3.10. Three equal-credit A− grades are 3.70. One F in a 4-credit course next to three 3-credit A’s is (0 + 36) / 13 ≈ 2.77—the credit weight of the F is the whole story.
If your syllabus gives percentages, convert to a letter with your syllabus scale first. A 91% might be an A− on one campus and an A on another. The percentage calculator can do the raw percent; it cannot invent your department’s cutoffs.
What GPA is for—and what it is not
GPA is a registrar statistic. Employers and labs often care more about the last two years, the major GPA, or the work itself. Do not let a tenth of a point become the only story you tell about a term that also included a job or a family problem.
Repeated courses, withdrawals, and incomplete grades follow campus policy. This tool only averages the rows you add.
Typical examples
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| A (3 cr) + B (3 cr) | GPA 3.50 |
| A (4 cr) + C (3 cr) + B (3 cr) | GPA 3.10 |
| All A−, equal credits | GPA 3.70 |
Frequently asked questions
- How is weighted GPA calculated?
- Convert each letter to points, multiply by credit hours, add those quality points, and divide by total credits. A 4-credit A counts more than a 1-credit A.
- What letter-to-point scale does this use?
- A 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7, F 0.0. Your campus may differ by a tenth.
- Can I calculate cumulative GPA across terms?
- Add every course you want in the average, including older terms. For a true cumulative number you must include all graded credits, not only this semester.
- Do pass/fail courses count?
- Usually they do not enter the GPA. Leave them off this list unless your school assigns points for them.
- Are my grades stored?
- No. The list lives in the page until you close it.
