Turn a job offer into a number you can compare

Job posts mix annual salaries, hourly wages, and contract day rates as if they were interchangeable. They are not. A $70,000 salary on a 50-hour week is a different living wage than the same salary on a 35-hour week. This salary to hourly calculator exists so you can put every offer on one scale before you negotiate, switch jobs, or decide whether freelance work actually pays more.

The conversion is simple arithmetic, but the inputs are where people go wrong. Hours per week, unpaid time off, and whether you count paid holidays all change the hourly equivalent. KindCalc keeps the math in your browser: nothing you type is sent to a server, and you can adjust the schedule until it matches the real job—not a generic 2,080-hour year.

How the salary to hourly formula works

The core formula is annual salary divided by working hours in a year. Working hours equal hours per week multiplied by working weeks. A standard full-time year uses 40 hours and 52 weeks, which is 2,080 hours. $62,400 ÷ 2,080 = $30 an hour. If you only work 48 weeks because four weeks are unpaid, the same salary becomes $62,400 ÷ 1,920 = $32.50 an hour.

Going the other way is the same relationship reversed: hourly rate × hours per week × working weeks. $22 × 40 × 52 = $45,760 a year. That number is still gross pay. It does not subtract federal income tax, FICA, state tax, or benefits. It also does not add employer-paid health insurance or retirement match, which can be worth several dollars per hour on a W-2 role compared with a 1099 contract.

When an offer includes a bonus, decide whether to include a conservative bonus (what you would underwrite) or only base salary. Including an unearned bonus makes the hourly rate look better than the cash you can count on in month three.

How to use this calculator

Choose a direction: salary to hourly, or hourly to salary. Enter the known pay figure, then set hours per week and working weeks. Most office roles can leave weeks at 52 if vacation is paid. Seasonal, academic, and unpaid-leave schedules should lower the week count. Press calculate only if you want to re-run after edits—the result updates as you type.

Compare two offers by running each with its real hours, not a shared default. A hospital role with three 12-hour shifts is 36 hours, not 40. A startup that expects evenings is not a 40-hour week even if the offer letter pretends it is. The honest hourly number is the one that uses the hours you will actually give the job.

Typical U.S. salary-to-hourly equivalents

On a 40-hour, 52-week calendar, $15 an hour is $31,200 a year, $20 is $41,600, $25 is $52,000, $30 is $62,400, $40 is $83,200, and $50 is $104,000. Those round numbers are why recruiters quote them: they are easy to remember and easy to compare with Bureau of Labor Statistics wage tables.

Part-time math surprises people. $28 an hour at 24 hours a week is about $34,944 a year—less than many $18 full-time roles after you account for benefits eligibility. Conversely, a $48,000 salary at 32 hours is $28.85 an hour, which can beat a $26 hourly job that demands 45 hours and unpaid lunch.

When this number should not be your only decision

Hourly equivalence ignores commute, on-call time, equipment you must buy, and the value of predictability. A salaried job with paid sick leave can be worth more than a higher contractor rate that stops the week you get the flu. If you are choosing between W-2 and 1099, run the take-home calculator next and budget 25–35% extra for self-employment tax and benefits you will buy yourself.

Use this tool to normalize pay. Use a budget, not this tool, to decide whether the number is enough. And if an employer quotes a salary but tracks your badge swipes like hourly labor, the hourly equivalent is the honest way to talk about overtime you will never see on a paycheck.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert salary to hourly?
Divide annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. The common formula is salary ÷ (hours per week × 52). If you take unpaid weeks off, use working weeks instead of 52.
How many hours are in a work year?
A full-time year is usually 2,080 hours (40 × 52). Many people work closer to 1,920–2,000 hours after holidays and vacation. This calculator lets you set both hours and weeks so the rate matches your schedule.
Does this include taxes or benefits?
No. The result is a gross rate before tax, insurance, or retirement deductions. Use the take-home pay calculator if you want a simple U.S. net-pay estimate.
Should overtime change the hourly equivalent?
If overtime is common, add those hours into the weekly total or the result will overstate your hourly rate. Salaried roles that rarely pay overtime should stay on regular scheduled hours.
Is a 40-hour week the right default?
It is the most common full-time assumption in the U.S., but teachers, nurses, contractors, and part-time roles often differ. Change the hours field whenever your offer letter or timesheet uses a different schedule.
